Backpack Policy Update

Dear Parent or Guardian,

Now that the season of cold weather is upon us, it is the season of colds and the flu.  It is ALSO the season for other pests such as bedbugs, roaches, and lice.  We have recently noticed an increase in these “nasty travelers” in our schools.  How are they coming into our schools?  They are coming to school on backpacks, blankets, and stuffed animals.

Once they come into our buildings, these nasty little critters move to other backpacks and make their way to more homes.  To prevent a potential infestation of bedbugs, roaches and lice in our community, we ask that students no longer bring backpacks, stuffed animals or blankets to school.  This will reduce the chance that these nasty critters will come into your home with your student’s backpack.

If your child needs to bring supplies to school such as medicine, feminine products, basketball shoes, etc. please use bags other than backpacks such as “fanny packs”  or plastic bags which are much less likely to attract bedbugs.  We need to work together to protect the community.  If your child has a medical concern that requires bringing clothing or other supplies to school, please contact your building principal so we can work with you.

This will go into effect the first day of school after winter break for all Red Lake Schools.Thank you.

Please remember to leave backpacks, stuffed animals, and blankets at home.
